Broadford Primary School project supports local peat restoration

The Broadford Primary School project has delivered environmental benefits through the reuse of excavated peat and soils at a nearby quarry.

Materials excavated during construction were reused in local peatland reinstatement works rather than being sent to landfill. This approach helped to reduce waste, lower associated carbon emissions and support the restoration of an important local landscape.

The reuse of peat and soils within the local area also avoided more than 205,000 miles of haulage, helping to minimise transportation impacts while keeping valuable natural materials in the community.

The Broadford Primary School project has demonstrated how sustainable construction can deliver benefits well beyond the school gates. Excavated peat and soils from the site were reused at a nearby quarry, where they are helping to support peatland reinstatement works rather than being sent to landfill. This local solution kept valuable natural materials in the community, avoided more than 205,000 miles of haulage, reduced associated carbon emissions, and contributed to the restoration of an important local landscape.
We are proud to have played a part in making this happen. The initiative aligns closely with our wider commitment to decarbonising the assets we deliver, reducing waste, and creating positive environmental outcomes. By identifying opportunities that benefit both the environment and local communities, we can help ensure our projects leave a meaningful legacy long after construction is complete.
